The Internet of Things (IoT) is a foundational technology in the “Smart Nation” Initiative. The Singapore government has launched S$2.4 billion (US$1.75 billion) to fuel the country’s digital transformation in 2017. In IoT, wireless technologies are among the most fundamental and promising techniques especially with the coming of 5G. The future network will become extremely heterogeneous, which brings great challenges to the wireless connection, spectrum share, as well as data fusion. My talk will introduce a novel technology, called the cross-technology communication, to break the wall between wireless technologies and pave the way to the ubiquitous connectivity in IoT networking. In the talk, I will focus on two main innovations: 1) how we can use a commodity Bluetooth device to emulate ZigBee signal without modifying the hardware or firmware; and 2) how we can achieve bidirectional communication in such an asymmetric scenario. I will introduce the basic ideas behind the innovations and their broad impact on existing IoT networking.


Wenchao Jiang is currently a Ph.D. candidate with the Department of Computer Science, at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. His research interests are on the Internet of Things (IoT), including the wireless communication, embedded system, low-power sensor and backscatter systems, mobile computing and localization. Wenchao has received the Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship at UMN. He is also a technical reviewer for several top journals including the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking.
